TV Show Plot For Kate and Allie

The Kate and Allie TV show ran on the CBS network from 1984 to 1989. The series was created by Sherry Coben, who originally titled the show "Two Mommies".

Susan Saint James was tapped for the part of Kate McArdle, and her friend Jane Curtin was hired to play the part of Allie Lowell.

Kate has one 14 year old daughter named Emma from a recently broken up marriage. Allie is also recently divorced and has a 14-year-old daughter Jennie and a seven-year-old son, Chip.

Kate and Allie was an immediate hit for CBS, ranking fourth in it's first week and getting consistently high ratings thereafter. Jane Curtin won two Emmys and Bill Persky, one.

The characters and the issues they dealt with obviously appealed to the program's audience. The series dealt with problems facing divorced women with children. The characters were trying to adjust to a different lifestyle and to living closely with new people. There were children's issues to deal with as well as beginning to date again and improving their financial situation.

In the last few seasons of Kate and Allie, Allie dated, and eventually married television sportscaster Bob Barsky. Allie and Bob moved into a new apartment; Bob then took a job which involved constant travel, and therefore Kate moved into the new apartment as well. The show's ratings began to decline the series was cancelled in 1989.
