The TV show A Different World was a comedy spin-off the popular 80's series Cosby. The show plots mainly dealt with 80's college-aged issues such as racism, fraternity pledging and college romances.

In the series A Different World Denise Huxtable (character for the Cosby Show) enters her second year at Hillman College where she shares a dorm room with 26-year-old Jaleesa Vinson and roommate Maggie Lauten.

Obnoxious and very wealthy fellow student Whitley Gilbert, smooth ladies' man Dwayne Wayne and dorm director Stevie Rallen were other first season cast members. Lettie Bostic later replaced Stevie as the new dorm director. At the end of the first season, Denise returned home to the Cosby's after dropping out of college.

Although A Different World stars Lisa Bonet and Marisa Tomei would leave the show after the initial season, A Different World continued and aired on NBC sucessfully for a total of six seasons.

Trivia for the TV Show A Different World

Despite terrible first season reviews, A Different World benefitted from its placement on the NBC lineup between The Cosby Show and Cheers on Thursday nights, and finished second in the nielson ratings during it's first season.

Cosby Show actors routinely showed up during the first season of A Different World in support of the Cosby spin-off, including Keisha Knight Pulliam, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, Phylicia Rashad as well as Bill Cosby himself.

Guest appearances were also made by Keenen Ivory Wayans and other In Living Color cast members, like David Allen Grier.
