Plot

A Passage To India begins in the decade of the 1920’s, during the British rule. It includes the character of Dr. Aziz H. Ahmed, who is an Indian born and raised in his country and Adela Quested, an Englishwoman who arrives to India accompanying her fiancée.

Adela and Dr. Aziz become friends. So, she asks him to go with her and her friend Mrs. Moore to visit some caves. This innocent trip ends in an accusation, made by Adela against Dr. Aziz, claiming that he raped her in the caves. At that moment, A Passage To India becomes a representation of the racial tension that existed between the British Empire and India at the time.

Trivia

A Passage To India was one of the many movies that were filmed in the 1980’s designed to portray the tension that existed between the British Empire, and India.

Alec Guiness and director David Lean quarreled frequently during the making of A Passage to India. When filming was over, many of the scenes containing Guiness were cut off alleging time constraints, but the relationship between the two men remained strained until the day Lean passed away.
