Summary

Plot

Death usually brings a family together but this is not the case for the Jarrett family in the movie Ordinary People. Parents Beth and Calvin (played by Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland) lose one of their sons and their surviving son, Conrad (Timothy Hutton), is having a hard time accepting the loss.

Conrad is suicidal and depressed and is in therapy and since his mother had always favored his deceased brother, she cannot console him or give him the emotional support that he craves. We see a concerned father, Calvin, trying to keep his family together. Will he succeed? Find out in the movie Ordinary People.

Although Timothy Hutton’s father passed away a few weeks before he commenced filming for the movie Ordinary People, Hutton said that his depressed demeanor for the role had nothing to do with him grieving for his father.
