Gene Hackman is Coach Norman Dale in Hoosiers, a coach with a notorious past who is determined to redeem himself by coaching a basketball team to victory.

Coach Norman Dale (Hackman) has a lot of basketball knowledge that would make the team excel and he teams up with Shooter (played by Dennis Hopper), a known drunk to help him and his team reach their goal in Hoosiers.

Since Europeans would not have understood what the word Hoosiers meant as the name of the movie, it was renamed Best Shot for the European audience.

Jerry Goldsmith won for Best Original Score for Hoosiers.
