The duo originally met when they were both students in Watford, England at Bushey Meads School. They originally performed in a band called the Executive. They later changed their name to Wham! and scored a record deal with Innervision Records. Later, after winning a legal battle against their original label, Wham! was able to sign to CBS and Columbia in the United States and Canada, and Epic for the rest of the world. They became incredibly successful – especially among the teenage girl population – after appearing in an episode of Top of the Pops. On this show, George Michael was featured wearing espadrilles, a suede jacket slit open, and rolled up jeans. They were backed up by singers Shirlie Holliman and D.C. Lee.

Wham! went on a world tour in the year 1985 that was later documented by Lindsay Anderson in his film Foreign Skies. The film was produced by Martin Lewis. The tour included a ten day visit through China, marking the first time in history that a Western pop group had toured the country. The Chinese tour was a publicity stunt devised by Wham! manager Simon Napier-Bell.

The albums of Wham! include Fantastic, Make it Big, Music from the Edge of Heaven, The Final, and the 1997 compilation If You Were There (The Best of Wham.)
