Vangelis Artist Bio and LyricsBorn Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, Vangelis is a world renowned ‘80s artist. He is perhaps best known for composing the scores to the films Chariots of Fire, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and Blade Runner.
It was the year 1981 in which Vangelis first rose to international prominence, with his score to the movie Chariots of Fire, which was set in 1924 at the Paris Olympics. Although it has been argued that an electronic music score was not well suited for a period piece, the score to the film did exceptionally well. Chariots of Fire would go on to win several Academy Awards, including Best Picture; Vangelis himself was awarded the Best Original Music Score for that year. The opening theme to Chariots of Fire, entitled “Titles,” was released as a single the following year. It made it to the top of the Billboard Charts. Since then, only one other instrumental track – the theme to Miami Vice by Jan Hammer – has managed to beat the record set by Vangelis’s theme to Chariots of Fire. The albums of Vangelis include Fais que ton reve soit plus long que la nuit, Earth, Heaven and Hell, Albedo 0.39, Spiral, Beaubourg, China, See You Later, Soil Festivities, Mask, Invisible Connections, Direct, The City, Voices, Oceanic, El Greco, and Mythodea: Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey. His film scores include Sex Power, L’Apocalypse des Animaux, Entends-tu les chiens aboyer?, La fete sauvage, Opera Sauvage, Chariots of Fire, Antarctica, Conquest of Paradise, and Blade Runner. |
