Tracy Chapman Artist Bio and LyricsBorn on the 30th of March 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio, the ‘80s artist Tracy Chapman is probably best known for her songs “Fast Car,” “Give Me One Reason,” “Talkin’ ‘Bout a Revolution,” and “Baby Can I Hold You.” She has won several Grammy Awards, and is a multi-platinum selling artist. Chapman began writing songs on the guitar when she was still a little girl. She was accepted in to A Better Chance, an academic program for gifted students of color, and later attended the Wooster School in Connecticut, as well as Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. In college, Chapman began performing on the street and in coffeehouses in and around Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was later signed to Elektra Records. Her debut album, Tracy Chapman, was released in the year 1988. The album was well received among critics, and Chapman began to tour heavily and develop a devoted fan base. Her song “Fast Car” eventually became a Top Ten hit in the United States. Her follow up singles, “Talkin’ About A Revolution” and “Baby Can I Hold You,” also did quite well on the charts. Chapman’s liberal politics made her enormously popular on college campuses in the United States throughout the 1980s. While Chapman does not openly discuss her private life, it is known that she had a relationship with writer Alice Walker in the 1990s.
