Toni Basil Artist Bio and LyricsThe ‘80s artist Toni Basil was born Antonia Christina Basilotta on the 22nd of September 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Basil’s music career began in the year 1966, when she recorded a single for the A&M Records label. It was the title track from the film Breakaway. Throughout the 1970s, she appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live on three separate occasions. It was not until the 1980s, however, that she released a follow up to her first single. “Mickey” became an international smash hit. The song is actually a cover of a previous song called “Kitty,” which was originally recorded by the British group Racey. “Mickey” would later be parodied by “Weird Al” Yankovic. “Mickey” made history as one of the most popular early MTV videos. Basil wore a cheerleader uniform from the high school she attended, Las Vegas High School, in the video. The song remains a popular staple to this day. Basil claims that she would be glad to put on the cheerleading costume she wore in the video if she were asked. “Mickey” was voted Number Five on the VH1’s 2003 list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders. The John W. Hallahan All Girls Catholic High School uses the song as their school fight song. In the ‘80s, Toni Basil only released two full length albums – Word of Mouth (1982) and Toni Basil (1983). There have been at least five Toni Basil best of compilations released to this day on compact disc. |
