The Pretenders Artist Bio and Lyrics

The ‘80s rock band the Pretenders have been around since the 1970s. The band’s initial line up consisted of singer and guitarist Chrissie Hynde, Martin Chambers on drums, James Honeyman-Scott on guitars, and Pete Farndon on bass. Today, only Hynde remains from the original line up, as the band has been fractured by numerous drug related deaths over the years.

Lyrics Back On The Chain Gang

Hynde came from Akron, Ohio. After attending Firestone High School and Kent State University (during the famous Kent State shootings), she relocated to London, where she began writing for the New Musical Express and dating the esteemed rock critic Nick Kent. After starting two unsuccessful bands, The Moors Murderers and Masters of the Backside, she finally found her luck with the Pretenders.

The band was signed to Real Records in the year 1978 and quickly rose to prominence with the release of their single, “Stop Your Sobbing,” the following year. Shortly afterwards, the singles “Kid” and “Brass in Pocket” were released. These songs helped the band crack the market in the United States, with the latter making to the fourteenth position on the Billboard charts. The band continues to record and perform to this day, with Hynde, as always, fronting the band. In 2005, the band was inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The albums of the Pretenders include Pretenders, Extended Play, Pretenders II, Learning to Crawl, Get Close, The Singles, Packed!, Last of the Independents, The Isle of View, Viva el Amor, Greatest Hits, Loose Screw, and the 2006 box set Pirate Radio.
