The origins of New Kids on the Block go back to the early 1980s. After founding the popular rhythm and blues act New Edition, Maurice Starr sought to create a white counterpart act. He auditioned over 500 teenage boys in the Boston area. Donnie Wahlberg, then fifteen, was picked out immediately. Wahlberg then helped Starr recruit the remaining members of the New Kids on the Block. The group’s first album was released on the Columbia Records label in the year 1986. Nearly all the tracks were written and produced by Starr. The album consisted of typical ‘80s bubble gum pop music.

The albums of the New Kids on the Block include New Kids on the Block, Hangin’ Tough, Merry Merry Christmas, Step by Step, Face the Music, No More Games: The Remix Album, Greatest Hits, and Super Hits.
