The J. Geils Band Artist Bio and Lyrics

The J. Geils Band, formed in Worchester, Massachusetts, began as a blues/R & B sounding band the 1970s, but found their success as an 80's pop band. The band formed under the name Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels in the mid 1960s but later would change their style and name to the J. Geils Band.

Under their former name Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels, J. Geils, Danny Klein, and Richard Swaltiz originated as an acoustic blues act. In 1967 the J. Geils band switched their motive and drafted their drummer, Stephen Jo Bladd and their singer, Peter Wolfe, a former DJ.

The band moved on and started using electric guitars and basses to suit their new sound. The J. Geils Band signed to Atlantic records in 1970 following the recruitment of an organist, Seth Justman. The soon-to-be 80s band would have several hits in the 70s such as, “First I Look At The Purse,” and “Must Have Got Lost.”

In the early 1980's, the J. Geils Band produced much more commercially appreciated singles under their new label, EMI Records. The release of “Love Stinks,” and their album Freeze Frame which wielded their major smash, “Centerfold.”

Wolf would leave the band shortly after the major successes to pursue another solo project following a major argument over the direction of the band. From the departure the J. Geils Band would never recover. They recorded another album, You’re Getting’ Even, While I’m Getting’ Odd, but it wouldn’t prove nearly as successful. Since their disbandment, the J. Geils Band would make several attempts to reunite, but each time the unity would be short lived.
