Romantics Artist Bio and Lyrics

The ‘80s band the Romantics was formed in Detroit, Michigan on Valentine’s Day 1977 – hence their name. The Romantics would attain moderate success in the United States and overseas throughout the first half of the 1980s thanks to their energetic, catchy tunes and memorable music videos. They were influenced by British invasion rock and roll, as well as Detroit garage rock, and punk rock. They specialized in a more commercial version of punk known as power pop. The Romantics were also frequently categorized as New Wave – probably owing more to the image and era of the band.

The line up of the Romantics originally consisted of Wally Palmer on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Skill on guitars, Rich Cole on bass, and Jimmy Marinos on drums. Palmar and Skill were the band’s primary composers, although all members contributed to the songwriting process.

After a few years of playing gigs in the Midwest, the Romantics released their eponymous debut album in the year 1980. It contained the hit song “What I Like About You.” In the late ‘80s, the song would become popular due to its placement on TV commercials. In the year 1981, the Replacements released their second album, National Breakout. Shortly after the album’s release, Skill left the band. He was replaced with Coz Canler.

The albums of the Romantics include The Romantics, National Breakout, Strictly Personal, In Heat, Rhythm Romance, 61/49, Made In Detroit, and The King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents: The Romantics Live in Concert.
