The ‘80s band Manhattan Transfer is actually the name of two separate vocal groups that contain many of the same members. The first version of the group was formed in the year 1969 in New York City, but broke up after the release of a single album. The second version of the group came together in the year 1972 and still plays together to this day.

Manhattan Transfer

The Manhattan Transfer is renowned for its mixture of pop, jazz, and big band styles of music. The Manhattan Transfer takes their name from John Dos Passos’s 1925 novel of the same name.

The Manhattan Transfer was founded by the vocalists Alan Paul, Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel, and Laurel Massé. In the band’s early years, they developed a critical following while playing such clubs in New York as Max’s Kansas City, Reno Sweeney, and Trude Heller’s.

In the year 1975, the Manhattan Transfer released their eponymous debut. (They had released one earlier album with a different line up, called Jukin’, but many consider The Manhattan Transfer to be the group’s first official album.)

The albums of the Manhattan Transfer include The Manhattan Transfer, Coming Out, Pastiche, The Manhattan Transfer Live, Extensions, Mecca Moderns, The Best of the Manhattan Transfer, Bodies and Souls, Bop Doo Wop, Vocalese, Man Tora! Live in Tokyo, Brasil, The Offbeat of Avenues, The Christmas Album, Anthology: Down in Birdland, The Very Best of the Manhattan Transfer, The Manhattan Transfer Meets Tubby the Tuba, Tonin’, Swing, Boy From New York City and Other Hits, The Spirit of St. Louis, and Vibrate.
