Level 42 Artist Bio and LyricsThe British ‘80s pop band Level 42 scored a number of hits all over the world throughout the decade. They are particularly renowned for the slap bass technique of Mark King and general stellar musicianship that has few rivals in the world of popular music.
Level 42 began in the year 1980 as a jazz funk fusion outfit. Its members, including brothers Phil and Boon Gould, along with Mark King, all came from the Isle of Wight and began playing together as teenagers. In the latter half of 1989, Phil introduced the keyboardist Mike Lindup to King. Phil and Lindup had met while studying in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The pair discovered that they had a lot of the same musical influences, including Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, and Keith Jarrett. Boon then returned to the United States. The band no longer had a bassist, so King volunteered to learn. Lindup was living in London at the time, but would regularly play with the band whenever he could. After the release of their single “Love Meeting Love,” Level 42 was signed to the Polydor Records label. One of the performers on that song was Wally Badarou, who would become a long term collaborator with Level 42. The albums of Level 42 include Level 42, The Early Tapes, The Pursuit of Accidents, Standing in the Light, True Colours, World Machine, Running in the Family, Starting at the Sun, Guaranteed, Forever Now, and Retro Glide. |
