Joey ScarburyLyrics Greatest American Hero (Believe It Or Not)

Scarbury grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, where his musical talents were encouraged from an early age by his mother. He received his first record deal at the tender age of fourteen. His first single, “She Never Smiles Anymore,” did not do well, and Scarbury was dropped by his record label.

Undaunted by this bad start, Scarbury remained in the music industry throughout the 1970s, working as a back up singer for such artists as Loretta Lynn and occasionally recording his own material. In the early 1970s, he had a minor hit with “Mixed Up Guy.” That was about the height of his success in the 1970s, though. Eventually he began working with producer and songwriter Mike Post. Post was offered the chance to write the theme song for a new series called The Greatest American Hero about a high school teacher who comes into possession of a superhero’s outfit. Scarbury was chosen to record this song. An extended version of the song made it to the second position on the charts in the United States.

Scarbury was unable to follow up on the success of the song, however. After releasing one follow up single, “When She Dances,” he disappeared from the charts. He would later record another song with Post, “Back to Black,” the theme song for the television show Hardcastle and McCormick.
