The DeBarge family group was founded in the year 1978. Shortly afterwards, they were discovered by Jermaine Jackson. That group, and the group of El’s older brothers, Switch, were then signed to the Motown label. While Switch would attain some success in the late 1970s, it was not until the early 1980s that DeBarge began making waves.

El took on a leading role vocally in that group, and also wrote and produced the group’s breakthrough release, All This Love, which featured the hit singles “All This Love” and “I Like It.” By the time of the release of DeBarge’s 1983 album, In a Special Way, El DeBarge was writing and singing the vast majority of the group’s material.

After the commercial success of DeBarge’s 1985 album Rhythm of the Night, El DeBarge left the group in order to embark on a solo career. He had a few small hits, including his collaboration with Quincey Jones, “Secret Garden.” He also recorded a memorable cover of the Marvin Gaye song “After the Dance.” Following the death of his brother Bobby in the year 1995, El DeBarge has withdrawn from public view, although he still works with such artists as Warren G.

The albums of El DeBarge include El DeBarge, Gemini, Heart, Mind and Soul, and 1994’s In the Storm.
