Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians Artist Bio and LyricsThe ‘80s jam band Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians originated in the state of Texas in the middle of the decade. They are perhaps best known for their 1988 song “What I Am,” which featured on their album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars.
Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians sound has been compared to R.E.M. for their clever mixture of rock and folk music which made them a popular college radio band. After 1990, Brickell would leave the band and marry the singer Paul Simon. In the year 2006, Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians launched a new website and put out a new album called Stranger Things. Members of the band - including Brickell, drummer Brandon Aly, guitarist Kenny Withrow, and percussionist John Bush – all attended the same arts magnet high school in Dallas, Texas. The band started out as a three piece ska band in the early half of the decade; at this point the line up included Aly, bassist Brad Houser, and Eric Presswood on guitar. The line up was rounded out in the year 1985 with Brickell. Soon after their first major show as Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, the band was offered management contract with local agent Deanna Mercer. After the six month period of the contract came to a close, the band decided to switch managers, going with Lon Bixby. The albums of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians include Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, Ghost of a Dog, The Live Montauk Sessions, and 2006’s Stranger Things. |
