Deniece Williams Artist Bio and LyricsThe ‘80s artist, producer, and composer Deniece Williams is perhaps best known for her songs “Silly” and “Let’s Hear It For the Boy.” Her music incorporates elements of pop, dance, soul, gospel, and R&B.
Williams was born June Deniece Chandler on the 3rd of June 1950 in Gary, Indiana. In the ‘70s, her musical career was launched when she was asked to become a back up singer for Stevie Wonder. Midway through the decade, she left Wonder and began working with the producer Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire fame. Her debut album, This is Niecy, was released in the year 1976. It featured the well known songs “Free,” “That’s What Friends Are For,” and “Cause You Love Me Baby.” In the early 1980s, Deniece Williams released the smash hit “Silly.” The ‘80s would be a major decade for Williams, who would also release a chart topping cover of the Royalettes’ “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle.” In the year 1984, Williams’s album Let’s Hear It For the Boy came out. It featured the chart topping title song, which made it on to the soundtrack of the film Footloose. In the late ‘80s, Deniece Williams released a number of albums, including Hot On the Trail, Water Under the Bridge, and As Good As It Gets. However, owing to a lack of promotion from her record label, her popularity began to fade as the decade came to a close. Her last top ten hit was 1988’s “I Can’t Wait.” |
