At the beginning of the 1980s, Chicago had already passed their golden age. Their albums chart positions were slowly slipping. The band was still delivering successful albums though. Their 1980s debut came in 1980 with Chicago XIV. The album yielded one charting single, “Thunder and Lightning” which landed at number 56. Also, in 1981 they released a greatest hits album, the Greatest Hits, Volume II.

In 1982, Chicago released their first album under Warner Bros. Chicago 16 would prove much more successful that its predecessor Chicago XIV. Chicago 16 rose to number nine in the US pop chart. The album included number one hit, “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” and top ten adult contemporary hit, “Love Me Tomorrow.”

Chicago released Chicago 17 in 1984. The album charted number 4 in the US. Singles from the album include; “Hard Habit to Break,” “Stay the Night,” and “You’re The Inspiration.” In 1985 CBS released a compilation title Take me Back to Boston. The release was not at all endorsed or authorized by the band.

The last two Chicago albums of the 1980s were Chicago 18 and Chicago 19. Both albums charted in the mid-thirties in the US. Chicago 19 included the number one hit, “Look Away.” Also in 1989 Chicago released a greatest hits album that spanned from 1982 to 1989. The album was successful mainly in the UK but charted 37 in the US.
