Ben E. King began his music career in 1958 in a Doo-Wop group called the Five Crowns. During that very year, Ben E. King and the Five Crowns would replace the old members of the drifters and Ben E. would be the lead singer on singles such as, “Save The Last Dance For Me,” “Dance With Me,” and “This Magic Moment.”

In 1960 he left the Drifters and changed to his stage name, Ben E. King. Under Atlantic Records, he released his first hit, “Spanish Harlem.” Following that success he recorded “Stand by Me” in 1961 which would be voted one of the Songs of the Century by the RIAA. “Spanish Harlem,” and “Stand by Me” both received Grammy Awards and named as two of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fames Top 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

In 1963 Ben E. King’s success took a backseat to the wave of British Pop bands that invaded the scene. In 1986 he re-issued “Stand by Me,” and it climbed to number 6 on the US charts. The song also appeared in a movie of the same title.
