Barry Manilow Artist Bio and Lyrics


Barry Manilow was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 17, 1943 with the name, Barry Allan Picnus. His music would dominate the charts in the 1970s, albums like Barry Manilow II and One Voice would break the top ten in the US. In his early years he was a commercial songwriter and is credited with the State Farm, Like a Good Neighbor theme and the Stuck on Band-Aid ad, as well as many others.

Barry Manilow’s successful career carried over into the eighties. His rendition of “Bandstand Boogie,” became the opening music from the T.V. show American Bandstand from 1978 to 1987. Beginning in 1983, following his show at the Blenhiem Palace, Manilow’s sound moved to a more jazz-driven sound.

The first album Barry Manilow released in the 1980s with his new jazzy edge was, 2:00 A.M. Paradise Cafe, which was released in 1984. In 1985 he would release another album, Manilow. This album would be moderately successful in the US. In 1985 Manilow had several successful singles, “Paradise Café,” and “In Search Of Love.”

Barry Manilow would release two more albums in the 1980s. First, in 1987, Swing Street which was another return to his jazzy style, but it was not a big hit in the US. In 1989 another self-titled album, Barry Manilow was released. Many of his singles from these two albums were not high-charting singles, but his career succeeded into the nineties.

Following the 1980s, Barry Manilow would keep releasing successful albums all the way up to recent. Among his releases in 2006, Best Songs of the Fifties rose to number one in the US.
